Alcohol Abuse: spilling or otherwise wasting beer at any time during a hash, especially during down-downs

Are You? (R U?): question shouted by the pack to front runners, meaning "Are you on trail?"

Arrow: directional trail mark.

Back Check (BC): trail mark indicating that runners should turn around and retrace their path while looking for true trail.

Beer: Hashers traditional refreshment.

Beer Check: trail mark indicating a beverage stop.

Beer Master: mismanagement member in charge of ensuring an adequate beverage supply for hash events.

Beer Near: trail mark indicating proximity of beverages; can be associated with a beer check or On-Inn.

Check: trail mark indicating an intersection where true trail may take another direction.

Checking!: answer shouted by front runners to pack when asked "Are You?", indicating that the front runner has not determined whether the trail he's following is true or false.

Circle: assembly of hashers at trail's end, normally for the purpose of conducting down-downs.

Dead Hare: hare who lays the entire trail before the pack sets out; usually accompanies the pack to ensure it doesn't get lost.

Debauchery: Any of several morale-building mixed-sex activities indulged in by hashers.

Down-Down: the ceremony of honouring a deserving hasher after the trail. This involves the hasher being given a drink and being sung a song by the Pack. When the words “drink” or “down” are sung the hasher starts to drink. The hasher continues to drink until one of two things happen:

1          The drink is finished and the hasher turns the glass over on top of their head to show that it is empty!

2          The hasher does not finish the drink and pours the rest over their head to show that it is empty!

False Trail: a section of trail going nowhere, designed to slow down the FRB’s and give the rest of the pack chance to catch up.

Flour: a basic substance used to mark trail; also Chalk, Paper.

Front Running Bastard (FRB): faster member of the pack (usually a front runner).

Full Moon: frequently an occasion for an evening hash.

"G" Day: February 11th. A.S. Gispert ("G"), the father of hashing, was killed in action defending Singapore from invading Japanese forces on this date in 1942.

Grand Master: (GM): is the ceremonial leader of The Hash; also Hash Master

Hare: is the person who has set the Trail

Harriet: Hasher of the female persuasion.

Hash Cash: mismanagement member; the treasurer

Hash Etiquette: euphemism for "rule"; also see Rule Number 1.

Hash Flash: hash photographer.

Hash Haberdasher: mismanagement member in charge of Hash clothes and souvenirs.

Hash Horn: carries a horn or bugle on trail, blows it to encourage and guide the pack.

Hash House Horrors: hashers' children or any other non-adult hasher.

Hash Master: is the ceremonial leader of The Hash; also Grand Master

Hash Mutt: Hasher of the canine persuasion.

Hash Name: nickname, usually bestowed after a set number of runs or in honour of a notable incident.

Hash Scribe: normally in charge of writing the hash trash.

Hash Trash: newsletter containing write-ups of past runs and announcements of upcoming events

Hasher: or Hash House Harrier is anyone taking part in The Hash.

Hounds: are the body of Hashers following the Trail, also called the Pack

Interhash: International hash gathering

Knitting Circle: group of harriers or harriet’s who spend more time walking and talking than hashing.

Live Hare: hare who gets a nominal head start and is pursued by the pack as he lays trail.

Mismanagement: hash officials; sometimes elected, sometimes appointed.

Nash Hash: a national hash gathering.

New Shoe: drinking vessel used during down-downs when the hasher turns up with recently purchased footwear.

On-On: Shouted by hashers when they are on the true trail.

On-One: Shouted by a hasher after finding one trail mark after a check.

On-Two: Shouted by a hasher after finding two trail marks after a check.

On-Back: shouted by FRBs to the pack when FRBs encounter a back check.

On-Inn: the most loved trail mark indicating that the end of the trail is near, and hence on-in to the Inn!

Pack: is the body of Hashers following the Trail, also called the Hounds

Racism: any mention of racing, including use of the word "race".

Ranging: the process whereby certain hounds run with total disregard for the trail.

Receding Hareline: list of upcoming hash events.

Religious Adviser (RA): presides over the Circle and is the authority on any matters relating to the rules, traditions, awarding of down-downs, and assigning of Hash Names.

Respect: reverential attitude of right-thinking pack members toward the GM and RA during the circle and down-downs.

Red Dress Run: theme hash where hares and pack wear red dresses; variations include lingerie runs, mini-skirt runs, nude runs, etc.

Returner: a hasher that has missed two consecutive runs

Rule: universally-understood tenet of acceptable hash behaviour; never called a "rule" but often euphemised as "tradition" or "hash etiquette"

Shiggy: jungle, thick vegetation, rocks, cliffs, streams, etc; especially mud.

Short-Cutting Bastard (SCB): habitual short-cutter, a title of esteem in most hashes

True Trail: the correct trail that was set by the Hare and leads eventually to the On-Inn.

Violation: any infraction of hash etiquette or tradition, on- or off-trail.

Violator: he or she who must be punished, normally by down-down.

Virgin: first-time hasher.
