HASHING FAQs         Back

Q. OK What's all this Hashing Stuff?

A. Hashing is basically a running club with a strong emphasis on the social aspect. It's been described as a "drinking club with a running problem". There are Hashing chapters all over the world and sure to be one near you. Each Hash has its own character - some put a strong emphasis on serious running, others are more relaxed with a mixture of long and short runs. Many are family oriented tailoring their runs to accommodate children (on lead) and family pets.

Q. Why the Funny Names?

A.  All Hashers eventually get a "Hash Name" which is usually something  slightly (or very!) derogatory.   It's all part of the fun!

Q. What is the Format of the Hash?

A. The main format of Hash is a "run" of about an hour with a get-together afterwards where selected members are ritually humiliated for various "sins" on the run by being  made to drink a  beer or softie called a "down-down".

Q.  I'm not keen on running but I like the sound of the drinking.  Do I have to Run?

A.  No, you can walk  with the Knitting Circle which  are a group of the elderly, infirm, lazy or just plain hung-over hashers.  The Knitting Circle usually follows a "Short-Cut"  which is a shorter route to the main run.

Q. Who sets the runs?

A. Volunteers from the Hash set the route before the actual run. Usually two or three hashers get together and mark the route with blobs of flour or sawdust.  They make sure Hashers do not get lost and "eventually" find the right footpath.  They are known as the "Hares" and can often be identified by their tee-shirts marked  "HARE".

Q. Where  does the Hash Run?

A.  Depends on where you live. The local runs usually start from and finish at a pub somewhere in the countryside.

Q. Who is in Charge?

A. The  Committee have various officers but the  three main ones  you need to know are:  1.  The GM who is the head honcho overseeing general mismanagement.  2. The R.A. (Religious Adviser) presides over the Hash Circle at the end of every Hash and metes out the punishments.  3. Hash Cash collects your subscriptions (yes, you have to give to receive!).

Q.  Where  can I find  my local Hash?

A.    For a complete listing of UK Hashes (and abroad) click Here. For local Rugby Hashes check the webpage for listings of forthcoming Hashes. You can also write to the Rugby GM here
